Granulated Stars of Judith Earrings

Granulated Stars of Judith Earrings

These earrings were inspired by a painting called Return of Judith to Bethulia, by Sandro Botticelli. I wanted to represent the beautiful, flowing fabric in the painting by the fine silver granulation. Judith, and feminine strength, is represented by the beautiful pink cubic zirconia. Cubic zirconia is a manmade gemstone that is often used as a more economical substitute for the diamond.

Granulation is an ancient technique, dating back nearly 5000 years. Tiny pieces of fine silver are melted into balls, and each of those balls is individually placed onto the piece. A flame is used to bring the metal up to a temperature just below that where it melts, and the metal fuses together without the addition of any solder.

The sterling silver earwires are handmade, and the earrings are 1-1/2 inches long.
