And Finally, A Blog...

I’ve been toying with the idea of a blog for a couple of years now. I’ll be the first to admit, however, that a writer I am not. In my dreams, I can write all sorts of stuff. In reality, it’s a painful, intimidating process. But these are interesting times we are in and I find myself with some extra time on my hands to take care of some of the projects I’ve been putting off, including this blog!

My goal with this blog is to provide some helpful information to my readers, some snapshots into my life and behind the scenes in my studio, and also to document a new endeavor I’m working on. This past year I joined Jewellery Training Solutions, a wonderful program in Australia run by Peter Keep. He offers hundreds of lessons in all sorts of jewelry-related projects. He also has an apprenticeship program that one can work through to get industry-recognized certification. While I’ve dabbled with some of the projects, I’ve been so busy with preparation for upcoming shows and orders that I haven’t had much time to devote this program.

In the beginning of March, I was lucky enough to be able to spend two weeks making jewelry with a wonderful group of ladies. This group gets together each year and rents a house, sets up shop in the garage, and spends the days working, gabbing and laughing. It’s so special to be with like minded people who are so willing to share their knowledge and talents. This year we had a wonderful house in Southern Shores, NC, and it was the first year that we spent two weeks. It was during the second week that Covid-19 was really starting to make itself known and places were beginning to be quarantined. We were able to make it home just in time for the stay in place orders. During my time at the beach, I was able to finish preparing for the four upcoming spring shows, which now have been cancelled. I’m so grateful to have had this time for concentrated work and the chance to collect and rejuvinate.

On my way to the retreat I stopped and worked with an engraver in Virginia, spending two days in his shop, trying to soak up any knowledge he imparted. While the work that I do is primarily chasing and repousse, I have a strong desire to learn to engrave. I mainly want to learn relief engraving, which is removing the background to give a sculpted effect. I plan to use this on smaller pieces, such as rings, and combine it with patterns of small diamonds. I’m super excited, but I realize there will be many, many, many hours of practice before I can achieve my vision.

Once I got home it was like entering into a new world. We were busy stocking up so we could limit our shopping trips, making sure everyone had what they need. Town is so quiet, many places looking deserted. And, with four adults and one 15 year old in the house 24/7, all of a sudden the house seems much smaller. One more son and a dog will be home soon, I hope. But in this tumultuous and scary time, I’m trying to feel gratitude for all I have.

And, one thing that I have in spades now is time. Time to pursue these things that were eluding me before, like my apprentice program, engraving practice and this blog. Please follow with me on my journey, and always feel free to contact me!
